REGUALTIONS ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF STUDENT RECORDS (GRADUATE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS)

 

1.

Applicants' Requirements:
 
Applicants should have high moral integrity, should be willing to abide by laws and decrees of China and rules and regulations of BNU and should respect Chinese traditions and customs.
a)

a)

Applicants for programs leading to master's degrees:

 
Under 45 years of age;
 
Bachelor's degree or higher academic degree;
 
Proficiency in Chinese.
 

b)

Applicants for programs leading to doctor's degrees:
 
Under 50 years of age;
 
Master's degree or higher academic degree;
 
Proficiency in Chinese.

2.

Application Materials:

a)

Applicants for programs leading to master's degrees:

 
Completed "Application Form for International Students" issued by BNU;
 
Certificate of economic guarantee;
 


Two recommendation letters by Associate Professors or scholars with higher academic titles;
 
Original or notarized certificates of Bachelor's degree;
 
University transcript; HSK certificate;
 
Application fee.
 

b)

Applicants for programs leading to doctor's degrees:
 
Completed "Application Form for International Students" issued by BNU;
 
Certificate of economic guarantee;
 


Two recommendation letters by Associate Professors or scholars with higher academic titles;
 
Original or notarized certificates of master's degree;
 
University and graduate school transcript;
 
HSK certificate (if applicants have passed);
 


Graduate thesis and its Chinese abstract (applicants for programs taught in English should present an English abstract);
 
Application fee.

3.

How to apply:

 

The application time is between October and December every year. Applicants may come to BNU to apply in person or may mail the related application materials to the Office of International Visiting Scholars and Students' Affairs.


Admission brochure and postgraduate program list are available at the Admission Office of the Graduate School and the Office of International Visiting Scholars and Students' Affairs


Applicants should pay the application fee to the Admission Office of the Graduate School and fill in the Admission Registration Form and Examination Permission.


Applicants who apply via mail may directly contact the Office of International Visiting Scholars and Students' Affairs of BNU, and entrust the office with these documents.
   
4. Entrance Examination:
The entrance examination will be held on the third weekend of March every year.
Applicants are expected to show their Examination Permission and other credentials.
Applicants are supposed to take two course-related tests.
   
5. Regulations on Exemption from Entrance Examinations:

a)

Government exchange applicants are enrolled based on an appraisal system without entrance examination. And for detailed regulations, see 8.
 

b)



Applicants graduated from BNU who apply for master's or doctor's programs of BNU are expected to be take entrance examination; for those who are really excellent can also be enrolled through a system of recommendation, and in this case, entrance examination can be omitted.

6.

Enrollment:
a)

a)

BNU graduate school will decide on a list of applicants who are to be admitted according to the results of both entrance examination and verification.

 

b)

 

The Office of International Visiting Scholars and Students' Affairs is responsible for the verification work and it will be responsible for sending the enrolment materials and materials for visa application.
 

c)




Applicants whose scores in the entrance examination are up to the standard and who meet the requirements of related regulations concerning foreign affairs of the Chinese government are to be formally enrolled as postgraduate students; applicants whose entrance examination scores are not up to the standard but who have displayed full potential in the applied field will also be accepted, but as trial graduate students.

7.

Issues on trial programs:


The duration of the trial program is one year, during which period the students do not enjoy the status of a graduate student.


The curriculum of the trial program should be the same as other graduate programs; trial students should pay the same tuition as international students in other graduate programs.

 



Trial students are supposed to take the next year's graduate entrance examination after paying the examination fee. Those who pass the examination will be formally enrolled as graduate students and will enjoy the status as a graduate student. The credits gained during the trial year are viewed as valid. Those who can't pass the next year's entrance examination will only be viewed as having completed a program. And tuition during the trial year will not be reimbursed.

 

Those who graduate within two years after the trial year should pay two years' tuition; those who can't graduate within two years after the trial year should pay the tuition according to regulations for extended duration of study from the third year on.
Trial students should sign a trial program contract with BNU.

8.

Issues on government exchange programs:
a)

Government exchange applicants are enrolled based on an appraisal system without entrance examination.

 

b)

 



The materials of applicants who are on the list issued by the State Commission of Scholarship Funds of China are to be examined and verified by collectively by the Office of International Visiting Scholars and Students' Affairs, BNU graduate school and related departments (institutes and schools). And the Office of International Visiting Scholars and Students' Affairs will be responsible for sending the verification results to the State Commission of Scholarship Funds of China.
 

c)

 

Government exchange students are supposed to take the yearly evaluation held by the State Commission of Scholarship Funds of China. Those who are not up to the standard are to be disqualified from scholarship and the status of graduate students.

9.

Registration:

Those who are admitted by BNU should come to register at the appointed time at the Office of International Visiting Scholars and Students' Affairs with the ADMISSION NOTICE, valid visa and other materials. After paying the tuition, students are expected to go to their departments (institutes and schools) to register with the "department register notice" issued by the Office.
   
10. Issues on Transferring:
 
Generally, graduate students in BNU are not allowed to transfer to another school or to another major. Provided there is adjustment in major, in teachers or advisors, and other unexpected situations, and students cannot continue to study in the original department or school, students can transfer to another school/ University or to another major with the approval of related department (school and institute) and BNU graduate school.
   
11. Issues on suspension:
 
Students who request for a leave of absence of two months or longer may apply for a suspension.

Students on their own expanses can apply for a suspension to the department (school and institute). Only after the application is approved by BNU Graduate School and the Office of International Visiting Scholars and Students' Affairs can the student leave. Besides, government exchange students also need to apply to their Embassies in China and to the State Commission of Scholarship Funds of China.

After the application for suspension is sanctioned, students should go through the procedures concerning their school transcripts in related departments and then send the transcripts to the Office of International Visiting Scholars and Students' Affairs Meanwhile, they should also go through the procedures concerning related campus credentials and apply for a Visa.
 

c)

The longest possible duration of suspension is two years.

12.

Issues on resumption:

Students on their own expenses should apply to the Office for resumption 3 months previous to the desired date of resumption. The resumption is valid if approved by BNU graduate school and the Office of International Visiting Scholars and Students' Affairs Government exchange students are expected to apply for resumption 6 months previous to the desired date of resumption. If approved by BNU graduate school and the Office of International Visiting Scholars and Students' Affairs, and also approved by their embassies in China and Chinese Committee for Government Scholarship, the resumption is valid.
   
13. Quitting schooling:
a)

The following kinds of students are to quit:

a)

 

a)

those who want to discontinue their schooling and apply to quit;
    b) those whose applications for resumption are not approved;
    c)

those who are mentally ill or who suffer from epilepsy and those who suffer from epidemic diseases and thus unsuitable to stay in China;
    d) those who have missed 50 hours' classes in accumulation;
    e) those who have seriously violated school rules;
    f) those whose words or actions are seriously anti-China;
    g)

those who have violated Chinese laws and who have received punishments of detention or more serious punishments by the Chinese legal institutions.

Those who have quitted BNU cannot re-apply.

 

(3)

 

BNU will not return any tuition to those who are expelled because of having violated Chinese laws. Tuitions are returned according to Regulations on Tuition Reimbursement to students who quit because of other reasons.
 

(4)

Students who quit should go through various procedures before leaving, including the procedures concerning various campus credentials and Visa.

14.

Issues on Duration of Study:

The duration of study for graduate students and doctor students is 3 years. Those who can't graduate in time can extend their duration of study, and the longest extension is 2 years, during which period the tuition should be paid according to the school regulations for extended duration of study. Students who have finished all the courses ahead of time can apply for an earlier graduation on condition that three years' tuition is paid.
   
15. Issues on Certificates:
 
Students who drop school before graduation are awarded a certificate of having studied in BNU. Students who don't pass the oral defense of their degree theses can redo the oral defense with the approval of the Graduate School. Graduate students should redo the oral defense within 1 year; doctor students, 2 years. Those who pass in the second oral defense are awarded diplomas and degree certificates; those who don't pass are only awarded a certificate of having studied in BNU.
   
16. Other regulations:
 
Graduate students must observe related regulations concerning graduate students education and management issued by the Chinese Ministry of Education and by BNU.
   
17. Implementation:
 
REGUALTIONS ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF STUDENT RECORDS (GRADUATE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS) is to be implemented from September 2002. If any previous regulation is inconsistent with the present regulations, the present regulations are to be implemented.
   
18. Explanation:
 
REGUALTIONS ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF STUDENT RECORDS (GRADUATE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS) is to be explained by BNU graduate school and the Office of International Exchange & Cooperation.
